CAMPING IN THE VENDÉE
Take your tribe on a camping holiday in the Vendée. A department in France’s Pays de la Loire region, the Vendée is the perfect place for a holiday with family or friends. Both adults and children alike will love the landscapes of the Vendée and the many activities the region has to offer.
THE VENDÉE COASTLINE
The Vendée coast stretches for more than 140 kilometres alongside the Atlantic Ocean, from Noirmoutier to l’Aiguillon sur Mer via Saint Jean de Monts and Les Sables d’Olonne. From fine sandy beaches to charming seaside resorts, you’ll love your camping holiday in the Vendée. Put on your swimsuit to top up your tan while you take some time out, have fun on the sand or indulge in water sports: paddleboarding, kitesurfing, canoeing, sailing… On the Vendée coastline, you will also find many surfing spots. You can put down your towel on Plage des Mouettes in Saint Hilaire de Riez or Parée Préneau for kite flying, or on the Plage de la Base Nautique in Saint Jean de Monts if you’re into sports, etc.
Along the coast, you can enjoy the seaside resorts and the various nautical events such as the Vendée Globe (sailing race). Discover Saint Jean de Monts with its gently sloping sandy beaches, perfect for children, its off-road bicycle paths and its wide range of activities. You can also stop off at Saint-Gilles-Croix de Vie, known for its sardine fishing. Its old town and beaches will keep you entertained. This camping trip in the Vendée will also be an opportunity to discover the islands of the Vendée. The island of Yeu offers a real playground for hiking, walking or biking. As for the island of Noirmoutier, it is ideal for strolling between the white houses with their colourful shutters, relaxing on the beach or shore fishing.
INLAND VENDÉE
The inland region reveals some nice surprises. Moving away from the coast, you will come across the Petites Cités de Caractère, small towns with a rich architectural heritage such as Mallièvre, Mouchamps, Pouzaugues and Apremont. Take advantage of these excursions to learn more about the history of the region by visiting mediaeval castles such as those of Talmont or Pouzaugues. Strongly marked by the Vendée War of 1793, the department still preserves testimonies, calvaries and monuments recalling the period. Various fun visits are organised at the Lucs sur Boulogne Memorial, the Historial de la Vendée museum and the Grasla refuge.
Art lover? Head to the museums of the Vendée for a cultural outing to discover the exhibitions on offer. Discover the museum dedicated to the painter-cum-traveller Charles Milclendeau in Soullans, the Museum of Popular Traditions and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MASC) in Sables d’Olonne, the birthplace of Georges Clemenceau in Mouilleron Saint Germain or the miniature village Vendée Miniature in Brétignolles sur Mer. This holiday in the Vendée will also be an opportunity to go to the famous Puy du Fou, a park ranked among the best in the world that invites you on a journey back through time.
Inland you will also find unspoilt countryside where you can go hiking, biking and horse riding through the Marais Poitevin marshlands, the mountain forests of Mervent-Vouvant, or the Yon valley. From countryside to coast, your taste buds will be tantalised on a journey through the regional cuisine. Vendée brioche, oysters, Saint Gilles sardines, salt, fresh mussels, ‘préfou’ garlic bread, the apéritif ‘troussepinette’, the coffee liqueur ‘kamok’, the list goes on… There are so many local products and specialities to try. The department of Vendée is also known for its wines. Various wine tours will allow you to discover the Vendée vineyards, some of which are grouped under the Fiefs Vendéens AOC.
